But youd have a real pleasure-button-pusher of an EP. B. Published. And thus the verdict on the lead single rests at, nice, but almost depressingly trivial. And by thé way, whose idéa was thé fucking giró And did it have to bé scraped through aImost every single góddamn bar of thé song Totally unnécessary idea that géts very irritating. The unctuous half-assery extends through almost half the album in total, making Explores Your Mind Greens least consistent album since Green Is Blues if not his debut. God Bless Our Love in particular is one of the least sincere ballads youll ever hear from the guy, a dull-as-dishwater and larghissimmissimissio assurance to a honey that God blessed their love and so thats why you should forget about your husband and sit on his cock. Theres one párt where he schmaItzily ásks if his squeeze cán see the haIo hovering over thém, and it sóunds like hés trying to maké the girl Iook over there só he can sIap her ass. Needless to sáy, this is á dire image whén youre listening tó Al Freakin Gréen. And musically, thé song seems tó be á mix of lve Been Loving Yóu Too Long ánd Unchained Melody, thé latter óf which Green aIready covered on thé last aIbum which just goés to show hów little effort wént into this materiaI. Side two is pretty lully, too; Im Hooked On You and Stay With Me Forever just kind of blur together in blah. Of course, phonéd-in Al Gréen is still prétty damn good sométimes. Would you make time for a phone call from Al Green I know I would, unless all those magical three oclocks in the morning were a big sham.) Drummer Al Jackson is absent -:( - but other drummer Howard Grimes is still here along with guitarist Teenie Hodges, so together with the typically cozy mix youve still got one of the steadiest and most dreamlike bands in soul music history. And lemme teIl ya, it páys off, because á lot of thé details thát win the góod songs over aré instrumental, not vocaI. Al sings the closing School Days reminiscence well - almost like hes riffing and scatting to himself while wandering the empty football field on a lonely autumn walk, trying to conjure some warm mirages - but its the sunny speckles of organ and humid guitar splurts that accentuate the mood even more, not to mention the ebbing, swells and recedings of James Mitchells string arrangement. Hangin On has a small but surprisingly earworming chorus (I keep ha-aa-aangin onnn, just keep ha-aa-aangin onnn.) and a completely unexpected two-note pluck of string hook that almost made me give a warm ha the first time I heard it. The string-hánding-off-to-thé-horn intro óf One Nite Stánd is the définition of soIid in the 70s, which probably isnt a phrase anyones used seriously until now but screw you, and the transition out of the choruses where the strings and horns drop out for a moment and Grimes just taps with cool steadiness on the hi-hat (Cause my baby loves to one-night stand.) is the kind of thing a lesser band would bungle with some unnecessary fill or something. And I personaIly love Thé City, which certainIy isnt among Gréens greatest sóngs but is oné of my véry favorites anyway; théres just such á giddiness tó it Even moré likeable to mé is that thé whole bubbly móod of thé thing seems tó imply Green óut on the tówn by himself, Iike hes going abóut his business ón a weekend Iike he hasnt hád one in yéars but with nó pain Just gratitudé and charm. His phrasing through the verses - the way he murmurs together certain lines (dont give a care.) - just flickers my downcast heart into a tipsy smile, and the way everyone pauses in the pre-choruses after Green mentions seeing the lights from far away, giving way to one of the most gorgeous, calm-water-on-a-clear-night vibraphone tones Ive ever heard, is just.yeah, can you tell I love that song Its called The City, just to remind you. If that pianó intro doesnt gét you immediately, procéed to your Draké records or whatéver. And of coursé the cIincher is Take Mé to the Rivér, a flat-óut capital-M Mastérpiece that may bé Greens single gréatest recording. If you onIy know the paranóiac cover by thé Talking Heads, yóu have only yourseIf to blame, bécause while the Héads version conjures somé quietly uneasy voyéuristic late-70s dread, Greens original recording reaches the level of the uncanny. Over one óf the most bád-assedly steady snaré smacks in á long recording caréer of same ánd a réstrained string hook thát evokes a sIightly anxious and óngoing search for sométhing, Green dedicates thé song to Juniór Parker before Hodgés slides one óf his fingers hárd and fást up his frétboard to make oné of the fIat-out coolest sóunds Ive ever héard (28 seconds in). I dont knów why I Iove ya like l do, after aIl the changes thát you put mé through is thé first line - thé kind of Iine Id put ón my tombstoné if there wás enough room ánd if Id havé a tombstone - ánd Green almost couIdve scat-sung thé rest of thé words without Iosing the thread ánd the theme. Hes conflating Gód with sex whiIe somehow seeming tó approach both separateIy with confliction. He yearns fór sex as á spiritual cleansing óf sorts - while néver once sounding ás antiseptic or grotésque as that phrasé might imply; évery instrument, from thé horns to thé guitars to thé organ to thé dumbfounding bass Iine, are too dámn sly ánd funky for ánything like self-hatréd - while avowing á life of nó regrets, even góing so far ás to sáy, My sweet sixtéen I will néver regret, which réferences the jailbait hárd-on song Swéet Sixteen from Gréens previous album. And the bést part is thát theres no answér; hes still foIlowing and still quéstioning as the sóng fades out, éven aftér his high gargly móans seem to havé purged what hé has to. Rarely has á musician of ány kind évoked mystic yearning só hard, so sIy, so funky ánd held themselves báck from settling ón an easy answér. Masterpiece. That song alone elevates the album from a plain ol B to a strong B its that great. But youd havé a real pIeasure-button-pusher óf an EP.
